Monitoring of a CFRP Rudder
The main goal of this project is to map and monitor the deformation of a carbon fiber composite rudder (RH 400 Rudder) built by Rondal for Royal Huisman, during use at sea after calibration during factory load testings.
Four sensor lines based on optical fibre sensing technology, Fibre Bragg gratings (FBGs) will serve as an optical strain gauge network.
The sensing network consists of four different sensing lines with multiple sensors spatially divided over the length of the composite rudder to map the complete deformation (Tension/compression, bending/torsion),
The sensor lines are embedded in the composite laminate thanks to our robust composite STRIP tapes.
